Haryana Rice Millers Protest Outside Food & Supplies Department Over ₹2,600 Crore Paddy Payments
Chandigarh 13 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Office-bearers and members of the Haryana Rice Millers Association staged a protest outside the Food & Supplies Department on Thursday, expressing anger over the long-pending issue involving paddy stocks and payments worth around ₹2,600 crore. The millers said the delay has pushed rice millers across the state into a serious financial crisis. Those present during the protest included Hansraj Singla, Jewel Singla, Saurabh Gupta, Raj Kumar Gupta, Rajinder Monga, Balraj Deswal, Naresh Bansal, Ravinder Sharma, Naresh Mehta and Rampal Goel, along with other office-bearers and members of the association.
According to the association, the millers have repeatedly raised the issue with the Chief Minister, concerned ministers and departmental officials, but no permanent solution has been reached so far. The millers said the stipulated deadline of June 30 for paddy procurement-related matters has already passed. However, the pending amount of around ₹2,600 crore and the issue concerning the paddy stock continue to cause financial difficulties for rice millers. The association demanded that the government immediately resolve the matter, release the pending payments and settle the issue related to the paddy stock.
Taking a strong stand during the protest, association representatives warned that if the government fails to accept their demands and resolve the issue, rice millers may refuse to lift paddy from farmers during the upcoming procurement season. They said the government would be responsible for any difficulties faced by farmers as a result. The association further warned that if no concrete decision is taken soon, rice millers and farmers across Haryana may take to the streets and launch a statewide agitation.
