Bathinda/Chandigarh 21 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : BJP National Office In-Charge and MP Tarun Chugh, while participating in the BJP’s ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Abhiyan’ in the presence of Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government over the growing concerns surrounding drugs, crime, corruption and extortion in Punjab. He said that while the government continues to publicise its flagship schemes, the real issues confronting Punjab today are Chitta, Crime, Corruption and Cash-for-Rangdari. Tarun Chugh said complaints about Chitta being sold in streets, markets, neighbourhoods and villages continue to emerge, while those raising their voice against the drug menace are facing serious challenges. The incident involving Jagga Singh of Namol in Sangrur, who allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, has brought these concerns into sharp focus. Jagga Singh and his family have alleged that he faced threats and harassment after raising his voice against the alleged drug trade. His family has also alleged that CCTV cameras and DVR equipment at his residence were tampered with. These allegations must be investigated independently, impartially and within a time-bound framework, and anyone found responsible for unlawful conduct must face action under the law.
Chugh said that when a citizen in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s own district of Sangrur raises his voice against drugs and allegedly faces threats and harassment instead of protection, it raises serious questions about law and order and administrative accountability. The government must answer a basic question: why should citizens who provide information about alleged drug sales feel unsafe, while those against whom such information is being provided continue to operate? He said Punjab’s crisis is not limited to Chitta. Concerns surrounding crime, gangster activity, extortion and attacks on law enforcement have also become serious issues. Attacks on police personnel, criminal activity and incidents challenging the authority of the state raise fundamental questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the fear of law among criminals. Chugh said the Bhagwant Mann government may continue showcasing its flagship schemes and achievements through advertisements, but the biggest concern for families across Punjab is the future of their children and protecting them from drugs. Punjab does not need schemes on paper, it needs safety on the ground. Punjab does not need publicity, it needs freedom from Chitta. Punjab does not need announcements, it needs relief from crime and extortion.
He said that if the Bhagwant Mann government is genuinely serious about fighting drugs, it must act against the entire drug network. Campaigns, posters and announcements alone will not solve the problem. Punjab needs effective action against drug suppliers, trafficking networks and anyone found facilitating or protecting the illegal drug trade. Chugh said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP remains fully committed to making Punjab drug-free. The ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Abhiyan’ being carried forward from Bathinda is not merely a political programme, but a campaign to bring every village, neighbourhood and family into the fight against drugs. He said the BJP will stand with the people of Punjab and build a decisive public movement against the 4C crisis of Chitta, Crime, Corruption and Cash-for-Rangdari. Chugh said that every young person determined to stay away from drugs, every parent worried about their child’s future and every citizen raising their voice against the drug mafia will find the BJP standing firmly with them. Punjab cannot be left at the mercy of drug traffickers, gangsters and extortionists. Punjab deserves a future defined not by the 4Cs, but by safety, a drug-free society and the rule of law.
