Preventing Pakistani Sikh Pilgrims from Travelling to India at Faisalabad Airport is Unfortunate : Wadala, Talwandi
Chandigarh 11 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Shiromani Akali Dal Punarn-Surjit General Secretary Gurpartap Singh Wadala and Youth Wing President Gurjit Singh Talwandi, in a joint press statement, alleged that preventing Pakistani Sikh pilgrims from travelling to India for pilgrimage despite holding valid Indian visas at Faisalabad Airport is a highly unfortunate and distressing incident. The pilgrims were travelling to visit Sri Hemkunt Sahib and other historic Sikh shrines located in India. The two leaders said that despite having valid Indian visas, Pakistani immigration authorities stopped the pilgrims from boarding their flights, demanding an NOC.
Since the Wagah-Attari land route between the two countries remains closed, the pilgrims had purchased expensive air tickets via Dubai/Sharjah to travel to India, spending lakhs of rupees. However, after being stopped at the airport, they missed their flights, resulting in substantial financial losses. According to the group leaders, no such NOC is generally required for ordinary citizens. If any such requirement was applicable, the pilgrims should have been informed about it at the time of booking their tickets or well in advance. Stopping their journey at the last moment after they had reached the airport is highly disappointing and distressing. Concluding their statement, the two leaders said that the governments of both countries should keep in mind the religious sentiments of the common people and simplify the rules and procedures for religious pilgrims. They also demanded that the Wagah border should be opened immediately.
