Strong Opposition to Street Light Privatization
Rallies to begin on September 9; massive protest demonstration outside the Municipal Corporation on September 23
Chandigarh 8 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A meeting of the Federation of UT Employees and Workers, Chandigarh, was held today in Sector 18 under the chairmanship of Federation President Rajendra Katoch. The meeting was attended by leadership representatives from various sectors, including Electricity, Water Supply, Roads, Horticulture, Indian Council, Anganwadi, MC Mani Majra, Sampark Centre, and the Health Employees Union. Discussions were held regarding the minutes of the meeting (covering 17 demands) issued with the Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation on August 13, 2026. It was observed that officials are still adopting a lackadaisical attitude toward most of the demands that had been agreed upon. Even the additional 2% DC rate has not been implemented yet. Outstanding salary arrears have not been released to employees, nor have the DC rates for electricians and horticulture supervisors been increased. No proposal has been sent to the administration to raise the ESI limit. Pensions and other benefits for retired personnel remain unpaid, and retrenched Public Health workers have not yet been reinstated.
Furthermore, no proposal regarding the regularization of employees or the principle of "equal pay for equal work" has been submitted to the administration. Anger was expressed during the meeting over the fact that, despite assurances given during the August 13 meeting against the privatization of street lights, the proposal for privatization is being rapidly implemented—a highly unfortunate decision. To mask its own shortcomings, the Corporation is making employees the scapegoats for privatization and once again hanging the sword of retrenchment over their heads; this will not be tolerated under any circumstances. During the meeting, it was announced that a massive sit-in protest would be held in front of all offices starting September 9th to oppose the privatization of street lighting. Large-scale demonstrations of protest will be staged on the days of the pre-bid meeting and the tender opening, followed by a massive protest sit-in in front of the Municipal Corporation on September 23rd, where a call for direct action will be announced.
