Urgent Memorandum Sent to the Prime Minister’s Office Seeking Immediate Implementation of DC Rates for Outsourced Sanitation Workers Engaged at Sulabh Public Toilets in Manimajra, Chandigarh, and Protection of Labour Rights
Chandigarh 3 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In order to safeguard the labour rights and fundamental rights of sanitation workers, the organisation “Voice for Fundamental Rights” has submitted an important memorandum to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The memorandum was submitted by Vikram Singh, resident of Kajheri, Chandigarh, highlighting the alleged administrative injustice and wage disparity faced by outsourced sanitation workers engaged at public Sulabh toilets under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh in the Manimajra area.
Citing facts brought to light by Shri Surmukh Singh, President of the Municipal Corporation Union, the memorandum states that these outsourced sanitation workers were earlier being paid remuneration/wages as per the prescribed Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rates. However, this system was allegedly discontinued, resulting in a serious financial hardship for the outsourced workers serving at these Sulabh public toilets.
Key Demands Raised in the Memorandum: 1. Immediate Restoration of DC Rates:
The prescribed DC Rate wages for all outsourced sanitation workers deployed in the Manimajra area should be restored and implemented immediately without any further delay.
2. Protection of Constitutional Rights:
The workers should be ensured fair and dignified wages in accordance with their rights guaranteed under Article 14 (Right to Equality) and Article 21 (Right to Life and Dignity) of the Constitution of India.
3. Prevention of Harassment and Threats:
Any threats of termination or harassment against workers for raising their legitimate demands should be stopped immediately, and proper employment security should be ensured for them.
4. Payment of Outstanding Arrears:
All pending arrears arising from the wage disparity or non-payment of DC Rates during the concerned period should be released without delay, so that the workers receive the wages legally and legitimately due to them as per the prescribed DC Rates.
Vikram Singh expressed confidence that, considering Chandigarh is a Union Territory under the direct administrative framework of the Central Government, the timely intervention of the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Central Government will ensure justice for these frontline sanitation workers, protect their fundamental rights, and bring an end to their alleged exploitation.
