Administration should stop implementing the employee law on Anganwadi workers regarding census duty : Harjit Kaur, Subhash Rani
Chandigarh 17 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Today, Anganwadi Employees Union Punjab CITU issued a statement to the press, state president Harjit Kaur Panjola, general secretary Subhash Rani, finance secretary Amritpal Kaur said that we strongly condemn the threats of legal action being given to Anganwadi workers and helpers by the district administration in the name of census duty. We have also given a memorandum to the departmental minister Dr. Baljit Kaur and the principal secretary of the department Gurkirat Kirpal Singh against this action of the administration.
We have also written to all the district deputy commissioners requesting not to impose the duty. They were also assured that the duty of Anganwadi workers will not be imposed. Even after the assurance, the Anganwadi workers are being pushed for duty. The Anganwadi workers neither have mobiles for work. The government had promised to provide mobiles. But the mobiles have not been given yet. Anganwadi workers are honorary workers under the flagship scheme of the Central Government, ICDS, and not regular government employees. Therefore, legal action or departmental action cannot be taken against them like government employees.
Anganwadi worker helpers are already responsible for many government schemes including Poshan Abhiyan, pre-school education, care of pregnant women and children. Secondly, they are also performing the duty of filling forms for the implementation of this scheme at various places under the Punjab Government's scheme Mawan Dhian Satkar Yojana by the Social Security and Women and Child Development Department. Despite this, burdening them with additional census duty and threatening them with legal action and filing cases if they do not do so is completely unfair and unreasonable. We demand from the government and the district administration that instead of intimidating and threatening the Anganwadi workers, their services and limitations should be understood. If these threats and pressure continue, the Anganwadi workers and helpers will be forced to take the path of struggle, for which the government and administration will be fully responsible.
