ESI Organises Internship Training Programme, RTI Awareness Session and Lecture on Environmental Laws
Chandigarh 12 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Environment Society of India (ESI), Chandigarh, is conducting an internship training programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students under the National Education Policy (NEP). The programme commenced on June 5 and will continue until mid-July 2027, providing students with 80 to 120 hours of practical training and field experience. Sharing details of the programme, environmentalist N.K. Jhingan, Secretary of ESI, said that a total of 15 interns from DAV College Chandigarh, Government Post Graduate College Sector-11 Chandigarh, Kurukshetra University, DAV College Karnal, and Chandigarh University, Gharuan, are participating in the programme. The objective of the internship programme is to provide students with practical exposure in the fields of environmental conservation, consumer awareness, heritage preservation, social service, and public administration. The programme includes awareness lectures, workshops, interactions with experts, and educational visits to project sites of the Forest and Environment Department, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, and various departments of the Chandigarh Administration.
During the programme, a special session on the Right to Information Act, 2005, was conducted by renowned RTI activist R.K. Garg. He highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in governance and informed the students about the effective use of RTI as an important tool for citizen empowerment. In addition, Advocate Ajay Jagga, Standing Counsel for the Government and Member of the Heritage Committee, Chandigarh Administration, delivered an informative lecture on environmental laws, heritage conservation, and the role of citizens in environmental protection. He explained various environmental laws, legal remedies available to citizens, the preservation of historical and cultural heritage, and the importance of public participation. The students also interacted with him on several issues related to environmental and heritage conservation. Speaking on the occasion, N.K. Jhingan said that experiential learning and community participation are essential for the holistic development of students. He added that the internship programme aims to connect students with real-life challenges and their solutions while fostering a sense of social and environmental responsibility.
Engineer Hem Raj Satija emphasized the importance of environmental management, plastic waste management, waste reduction, and adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Ashok Kumar encouraged students to actively participate in social and community activities and contribute towards nation-building. The participants appreciated the practical and informative nature of the programme and expressed keen interest in the upcoming field visits, workshops, and expert interaction sessions. It is noteworthy that The Environment Society of India has been organizing programmes related to environment, education, heritage conservation, and social awareness for several decades. The organization continues to provide meaningful opportunities for young people to learn beyond the classroom and engage in community service.
