Lecture on the Astronomical Connections, Traditional Knowledge and Ecological Importance of Nakshatra Trees Inspires Environmental Enthusiasts

Chandigarh 17 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Environment Society of India (ESI), Chandigarh, organized an informative and interactive lecture on “Nakshatra Trees and Their Significance” at Government Model Senior Secondary School (NYC), Sector-23, Chandigarh. Welcoming the chief speaker, intern students, teachers, and other participants, N.K. Jhingan, Secretary, ESI, emphasized the need to connect environmental conservation with India's traditional knowledge systems and to enhance public awareness about tree plantation. The lecture was delivered by Anil Kumar, Junior Engineer (Horticulture), PGIMER, Chandigarh, who made a detailed presentation on the concept of Nakshatra Trees and their significance in human life through a PowerPoint presentation. He explained the relationship between different Nakshatras (constellations) and their associated tree species, highlighting the environmental, medicinal, cultural, and spiritual importance of these trees.

The programme was attended by intern students from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra; Chandigarh University, Gharuan; Government Post Graduate College, Sector-11, Chandigarh; DAV College, Sector-10, Chandigarh; DAV College, Karnal; and IIT Mumbai. Members of the organization were also present. Among the attendees were Ashok Kumar, Member, ESI, and Ms. Ritu Nagia, Lecturer, Government Model Senior Secondary School (NYC), Sector-23, Chandigarh. The students showed keen interest in the subject and actively participated in the interactive session. They asked several questions related to the selection of suitable plants, tree plantation techniques, care and conservation of trees, and the potential impact of Nakshatra Trees on career growth, prosperity, income, and overall life. The chief speaker provided detailed and satisfactory answers, making the session highly engaging and educational.
Speaking on the occasion, N.K. Jhingan said that such awareness workshops are essential for educating people about the importance of planting the right kinds of trees for future generations. He noted that when people understand the significance and benefits of different tree species, they are more likely not only to plant more trees but also to take responsibility for their protection. He further remarked that people often fail to recognize the importance of the trees around them. Awareness programmes of this nature encourage citizens not only to plant trees but also to protect and preserve existing green assets. He stressed that tree plantation should be considered a social responsibility of every individual and that traditional concepts such as Nakshatra Trees can serve as an effective means of promoting environmental conservation. The participants appreciated the lecture and expressed their desire for more programmes in the future on topics such as biodiversity, medicinal plants, environmental conservation, and sustainable living practices.
