Chandigarh 1 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A grand farewell ceremony was held here today for the renowned trade union leader and Federation Joint Secretary, Shri Bihari Lal. The event was organized by the Federation of UT Employees and Workers, Chandigarh, in Sector 30. Rajendra Katoch, President of the Federation, presided over the function. Office bearers from approximately fifteen unions—including ICCW, Electricity, Water Supply, Road Electrical, MC Manimajra, Sampark Centre, Anganwadi, Government Hospital (Sector 16), UT Handicapped Employees Union, and the UT & MC Pensioners Association—along with a large number of crèche workers and helpers, participated in the event.
Comrade Bihari Lal joined the Indian Council for Child Welfare (Bal Bhavan) in 1990 and has been an active worker for the union and federation since 1992. He currently serves as the General Secretary of the ICCW Union and the Additional General Secretary of the Federation of UT Employees and Workers, Chandigarh. He dedicated 34 invaluable years of his service to the cause of employee welfare. He is a truly honest, hardworking individual who upholds the principles of scientific trade unionism. He always operated based on a scientific outlook and never hesitated to undertake even the smallest of tasks.
He has consistently opposed self-styled trade unions that treat unionism merely as a business venture and act as obstacles to employee unity. He never allowed his trade union activities to interfere with his official departmental duties and always raised a strong voice against wrongdoing. He had to pay a price for this on several occasions, yet he never wavered from his objective. On this occasion, special honor was also accorded to his wife, Smt. Sudesh Kumari, who steadfastly supported Bihari Lal in his trade union work and endured numerous hardships alongside him.
Federation President Gopal Dutt Joshi made special mention of Shri Bihari Lal’s contributions and read out a citation honoring his commitment to the trade union. Others who spoke about Comrade Bihari Lal’s achievements included Federation General Secretary Harkesh Chand; former President Dhyan Singh; Bhimsen; Rekha Sharma (President, National Working Women's Committee); Vijay Singh, Sucha Singh, and Sohan Singh from the Pensioners' Union; Sukhvinder Singh Sidhu and Gurmeet Singh (Vice Presidents, Bijli Union); M.M. Subramanyam and Virendra Singh (National Executive Members, All India State Government Employees Federation); and Rekha Gora (member of the Women's Sub-committee).Representatives and members from various associated unions—including Harpal Singh, Harbinderpal Singh, Nasib Singh, Manoj Bhoria, Sunil Chauhan, Tarun Jaiswal, Hardeep Sharma, Pan Singh, Veena Devi, Neelam Kumari, Budhram, Harinder Prasad, and Subhash Chand—also participated in the ceremony. In conclusion, Comrade Bihari Lal expressed his gratitude to the Federation and all the unions for this extraordinary honor.
