'Satluj' release can reinforce India's democratic credentials: IndUS Canada Foundation
Chandigarh 8 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The IndUS Canada Foundation (ICF), one of the leading forum representing the Indian diaspora across the United States and Canada has appealed to US President Donald Trump to intervene in the matter concerning the Indian film /Satluj' and raise the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the lifting of the alleged restrictions on its theatrical release. The Foundation has also written to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, seeking his support in advocating for the film's theatrical release in India.
In separate communications addressed to the White House and the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, Vikram Bajwa, President of the IndUS Canada Forum (ICF) has requested that Satluj be permitted a nationwide theatrical release in India alongside its planned OTT premiere. According to the ICF, the film deserves to reach audiences through cinemas, and restricting its theatrical exhibition raises concerns regarding freedom of expression and artistic freedom.
Explaining the rationale behind the appeal, Vikram Bajwa said, "The issue extends beyond the release of a single film. It is about reaffirming India's commitment to the democratic values. This is an opportunity for PM Modi to reinforce India's democratic credentials before the G7 nations by upholding the principles of human rights and freedom of expression. Allowing theatrical release of Satluj would reinforce India's credentials as a vibrant democracy where diverse voices and artistic expression are respected. We believe audiences should have the freedom to watch the film in cinemas and form their own opinions. Such a decision would send a positive message to the international community that India remains confident in its democratic institutions and committed to safeguarding the constitutional values of free speech and creative expression."
ICF clarifies that the appeal reflects the aspirations of the Indian diaspora which serves as a vital bridge between India and the United States along with Canada. Therefore, when it raises concerns about democratic values and freedom of expression, both of the nations should give them due consideration in the spirit of strengthening bilateral ties. According to ICF, a constructive resolution would enhance trust between the Indian diaspora and the Prime Minister's Office, reinforce India's image as a confident democracy, encourage greater confidence among global investors and partners and demonstrate the country's commitment to human rights.
