Sutlej' Film Being Blocked on OTT Is a Symbol of Undeclared Censorship : Dhindsa, Phillaur
Chandigarh 8 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Senior Vice President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punarsurjit), Parminder Singh Dhindsa, and Sarwan Singh Phillaur, in a joint press statement, alleged that the blocking of the film Sutlej is a symbol of undeclared censorship in the country. The two leaders stated that the film, originally titled Punjab 95, is based on true events that took place in Punjab and portrays the life and struggle of Jaswant Singh Khalra, former General Secretary of the Human Rights Wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal.
They said that the film has remained with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) since 2022 and could not be released in cinemas because the Board demanded 127 cuts and modifications. They argued that implementing such extensive changes would have destroyed the film's original essence and message. They further said that even after the film was reportedly released on an OTT platform under the new title Sutlej, its removal within 48 hours demonstrates that those in power do not want the truth about the atrocities committed against Sikhs to come before the public. "If governments are unwilling to even allow these painful realities to be seen, how can they ever be expected to deliver justice or heal the wounds of the victims?" they questioned.
According to the leaders, the incident reflects a discriminatory approach towards Sikhs, alleging that laws are applied differently when Sikh issues are involved. They pointed out that films such as The Kashmir Files and Emergency have been released, while films depicting what they described as the true events of atrocities against Sikhs continue to face obstacles. Dhindsa and Phillaur demanded that the film be released immediately under its original title, Punjab 95, without any cuts or alterations.
