Park Grecian Hospital gives new lease of life to 32-year-old woman

S.A.S.Nagar 20 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A 32-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and severely uncontrolled blood glucose levels got a new lease of life after a treatment at Park Grecian Hospital, Mohali recently. The woman successfully treated for extensive deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the right lower limb complicated by life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE). She was brought to Park in a severely elevated blood glucose level, along with significant swelling, numbness, discoloration and severe pain in her right lower limb.

She was initially managed by Dr. Neeraj Garg, consultant–endocrinology, with aggressive management of her uncontrolled diabetes along with appropriate anticoagulation. Given the extensive nature of the thrombosis and the limb-threatening clinical presentation, she was subsequently evaluated by Dr. Syed Wahid, vascular surgeon, and Dr. Sankalp Sharma, associate director–interventional cardiology. Further evaluation revealed a massive pulmonary embolism with approximately 90% clot burden/obstruction, placing the patient at significant risk of rapid deterioration and potentially fatal cardiovascular compromise.

Dr. Sankalp Sharma and the interventional team performed advanced catheter-based therapy, including catheter-directed thrombolysis and mechanical embolectomy, following appropriate systemic thrombolytic therapy. An Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filter was also implanted to reduce the risk of further thromboembolic migration to the lungs. Following the procedure, the patient was closely monitored and managed by the multidisciplinary team. She responded well to treatment and is currently stable and recovering.
