Zonal NRI Milni an Eyewash for Punjabi Diaspora, Says NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal

Zonal NRI Milni an Eyewash for Punjabi Diaspora, Says NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal Chandigarh 27 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A zonal meeting organised to address the issues and concerns of the NRI community has proved to be little more than an eyewash and has failed to provide meaningful relief to members of the Punjabi diaspora, particularly those who travel long distances with genuine grievances and return home empty-handed. This was stated by Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA), in a press statement issued here today. Sharing his own experience of attending an NRI Milni, Chahal said that he himself had been a victim of alleged police inaction in Punjab. He said he had approached the then NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, and his complaint was registered with the NRI Sabha. The minister, he added, had assured him that his matter would be taken up on a priority basis. “Despite my good relations with...

Common man’s survival became difficult under Modi: Warring

Party workers serve tea without ‘unaffordable’ sugar

Chandigarh 26 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : August 26: Hundreds of Congress workers today staged a massive protest against the rising prices of sugar in the country and blamed it on the wrong policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the centre. The protestors were led by the Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The protestors also served tea without sugar, in a symbolic message that sugar had now become unaffordable for the common man. Speaking on the occasion, Warring alleged that the Narendra Modi government’s policies had contributed to a sharp rise in the prices of essential food items, saying inflation had now engulfed the entire household kitchen and was placing an increasing burden on ordinary consumers.

Quoting data, he said, retail and wholesale sugar prices had increased by around 40 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year, with the increase reaching up to 50 per cent in some states. Sugar prices had crossed Rs 65 per kg in eight states, he noted. The PCC president attributed the situation to flawed government policies on sugar exports and ethanol production. The senior Congress leader said that over the past three months, sugar prices had risen from Rs 48 to Rs 67 per kg, while jaggery prices had increased from Rs 50 to Rs 65 per kg. “First exports, then diversion for ethanol and now imports to control inflation”, he pointed out, asking, “what kind of policy is this?”
Warring questioned why repeated government intervention was required to control prices of essential commodities if the government’s economic and agricultural policies were successful. He also linked rising food prices to the government’s E20 ethanol-blending policy, alleging that the policy was putting pressure on both household budgets and transport costs. The PCC president also questioned why petrol prices had not fallen despite the government’s claims that ethanol blending was generating savings.
He reminded the government that Union minister Nitin Gadkari had in 2018 projected that ethanol blending could provide significant relief in petrol and diesel prices, but said consumers continued to pay high prices for petrol. He asked why flour, pulses, cooking oil, sugar, jaggery, onions and other essentials were becoming more expensive, while petrol prices had not declined despite the ethanol-blending policy. Senior Congress leaders including AICC secretary Ravinder Dalvi, former minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and Hardayal Kambhoj, Kuljeet Singh Nagra , Gursharan Randhawa, Naresh duggal, Ashwani Sharma, Ajay Mangupur, Surinder Singh, Jagdev gaga, Kamal Kishore, Nishat Akhtar, Baljit Kaur and Gurpreet lucky pakho.
