Two aged Panchkula heart patients get new lease of life after protected PCI at Livasa Hospital Mohali
Panchkula 19 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Two aged Panchkula patients with life-threatening heart conditions got a new lease of life after the successful protected angioplasty with stenting (PCI) at Livasa Hospital Mohali. Giving information during a press conference at Panchkula on Wednesday, Dr Harinder K Bali, Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, Livasa Hospitals said that Impella, the world’s smallest mechanical heart pump, was used to provide temporary circulatory support during these complex procedures. A 78-year-old man was presented with acute myocardial infarction, with all three coronary arteries, including the left main artery, heavily calcified and critically blocked.
Dr Bali said,”The miniature heart pump, Impella, was non-surgically introduced through the femoral artery in the groin. The entire angioplasty and stenting procedure were completed in a single sitting. Left main bifurcation stenting and right coronary artery stenting were performed. Considering the severe calcification, the procedure was carried out under intracoronary imaging using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).” The five stents were deployed and stent optimisation was confirmed by OCT. The pump was removed after angioplasty once the heart was stable. The patient, was discharged after two days and is doing well two years after the procedure, said Dr Bali.
The second patient, an 80-year-old woman was admitted with an acute heart attack and impending cardiogenic shock. She had severe left ventricular dysfunction and severe mitral regurgitation, or leakage of the left-sided heart valve. Dr Bali said, “Protected PCI using the Impella heart pump was used to successfully perform left main angioplasty and stenting. She required Impella support for three days and was slowly weaned off Impella.” Dr Bali further informed that protected PCI maintains cardiac output and optimum blood circulation in the body while performing high-risk angioplasty in patients with poor left ventricular function, multiple artery blockages or multiple comorbidities.
In appropriately selected patients, it can enable complex coronary intervention when surgery may not be a suitable option. A high level of technical expertise, a ‘heart team’ approach and multi-specialty coordination are essential for carrying out such complex procedures, said Dr Bali.
