‘BJP has reportedly put a condition before Akalis to abandon opposition to the three farm laws’
S.A.S.Nagar 3 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu has strongly reacted to discussions about a possible Akali-BJP alliance, saying that neither of these parties will be able to regain a foothold in Punjab even if they come together, as the people of the state have rejected both parties more than once. Sidhu said that Sukhbir Singh Badal crossed all limits of opportunism and self-interest by embracing Prime Minister Narendra Modi while stepping over the bodies of more than 750 farmers who were martyred during the farmers’ protest at Delhi’s borders. He said that the present leadership of the Akali Dal, which once spoke about greater autonomy for the states, is now pleading for an alliance with the BJP, which seeks to encroach upon the rights and powers of the states. He further said that through this unprincipled political alliance, the Akali Dal has embarked on a path of suppressing Punjab’s regional sentiments, aspirations and desires.
The senior Congress leader said that there is strong discussion in political circles that the BJP has put a condition before the Akalis that they must abandon their opposition to the three repealed farm laws, against which farmers had to wage a prolonged and bloody struggle to get them repealed. He said the previous experience of the Akali-BJP alliance shows that because the Akalis completely surrendered before the BJP, not a single issue concerning Punjab or the Sikh community was resolved; instead, these issues became even more complicated.
Sidhu said that the people of Punjab have still not forgotten the Bargari, Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan incidents, nor have they forgotten the atrocities committed against farmers and the sacrifices made by them during the prolonged farmers’ protest at the borders of Delhi. He said that the Akalis and the BJP should therefore forget about forming a government in Punjab by joining hands. He also said that the Akali-BJP alliance has reached a stage where even two zeros joined together still amount to zero.
