It is foolish to expect a drug-using Chief Minister to make Punjab drug-free : Balwinder Kumbhra

He stated that if action is not taken against the minister responsible for Gulzar Singh's death, a state-level agitation will be launched

He alleged that Punjab's SC Commission, Human Rights Commission, and Women's Commission are in a deep slumber

S.A.S.Nagar 11 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Various social, religious, and political organizations have mobilized in support of the aggrieved family following the recent suicide of Gulzar Singh—a Dalit man from the Punjab village of Toor Banjara—who took his own life after being harassed by the police administration for speaking out against drugs and facing pressure to shield a sitting Punjab minister. Balwinder Singh Kumbhra—president of the SC/BC Morcha, which has been staging a protest at the Phase 7 traffic lights in Mohali for nearly three years under the banner of the SC/BC Maha Panchayat Punjab—lashed out at the Punjab government, stating that it is futile to expect a drug-free Punjab under the current Chief Minister. If anyone questions a minister or MLA of this government regarding drugs, they are either brutally beaten or harassed to such an extent that they are driven to suicide and lose their life.

Mohanjit Singh, a young man from Shero village, also displayed a black cloth during the Chief Minister's *Sangat Milni* (public interaction) event; the police beat him so severely that he was left on the verge of death, and today he is undergoing treatment in the hospital. The controversy surrounding Mohanjit had barely cooled down when, during a public outreach meeting (*Sangat Darshan*), a man named Gulzar Singh (from the Toor Banjara community) asked Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema a question regarding the drug menace; while sharing his family's plight, he mentioned that his own son was also addicted to drugs. However, the police, the government, and their supporters humiliated and pressured him to such an extent that, out of fear, he deemed committing suicide by consuming Celphos to be the only option; he even named the responsible individuals in a video. However, the Punjab government wants to shield its minister, and it is truly shameful that the cremation was forcibly carried out without the family's presence, amidst a massive police deployment.

None of the bodies—such as the Punjab SC Commission, the Human Rights Commission, and the Women's Commission—took any action. Meanwhile, the National SC Commission personally met the family and assured them of justice. Speaking further, President Kumbhra stated that if the family of Gulzar Singh—who belongs to the SC community—does not receive justice soon and no action is taken against the minister, the SC/BC Morcha will launch a major state-level agitation in the coming days. They also appealed to all the intellectuals, political leaders, and prominent personalities of Punjab to come together and personally pull the state out of this quagmire of drug abuse, as expecting anything from this incompetent government would be sheer folly.
