Chandigarh/Amritsar 18 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Condemning the killing of Punjab Police ASI Harjit Singh in Amritsar, BJP National Office In-Charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh said that the incident is deeply tragic and distressing. The killing of a uniformed police officer while he was on duty raises serious questions about the state of law and order and the security of police personnel in Punjab. According to reports, ASI Harjit Singh was attacked by motorcycle-borne assailants near Bhagtanwala grain market and succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. Chugh said the incident cannot be viewed in isolation. There have been several recent attacks targeting police personnel in Punjab, raising serious concerns about the morale of the police force and the security environment in the border state. Punjab has also witnessed attacks on police establishments, including grenade attacks and the rocket-propelled attack on the Punjab Police headquarters. In recent days, an obscure outfit has also claimed responsibility for an attack on a police officer, though its identity and links remain under investigation.

Chugh said that in a sensitive border state like Punjab, repeated attacks on police personnel are not merely a law-and-order issue but a matter of internal security. He alleged that the Bhagwant Mann government has failed to take effective action against the interconnected challenges of drugs, gangsterism, extortion and violent crime. When uniformed police officers themselves are being targeted, he said, the government owes the people a clear explanation as to why criminals appear to have so little fear of the law. He said the people of Punjab need effective policing, firm action against criminals and restoration of the authority of law, rather than political statements and announcements. Punjab has already witnessed attacks on police infrastructure and political establishments. The government must answer why criminals continue to operate with such impunity and what concrete steps are being taken to ensure that Punjab Police personnel can perform their duties without fear.

Chugh said that the BJP’s four ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatras’ are also commencing with the resolve to free Punjab from drugs, terror, fear and extortion. BJP National President Nitin Nabin will flag off the first yatra from Pathankot today. The second yatra will begin from Fatehgarh Sahib on September 19 with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the third from Fazilka on September 20 with Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and the fourth from Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district on September 21 with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The campaign will take the message against drugs to different parts of Punjab and seek to turn the fight against drugs into a broad-based public movement. Chugh said the people of Punjab want a safer Punjab and a decisive response against the forces threatening its youth and families. He said the BJP stands firmly with the people in the fight against the drug trade, terrorism, gangsterism and extortion and will continue to raise its voice for a secure and prosperous Punjab. Paying tribute to ASI Harjit Singh, Chugh expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and demanded that the perpetrators of the heinous killing be identified, arrested at the earliest and brought to justice.
