People aggrieved by the Punjab government (Punjab does not need the slogan "We do not want Bhagwant Mann again": Kumbra
The SDO took charge of the situation just before the effigies of the Powercom Minister could be burnt
S.A.S.Nagar 15 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Residents of Kumbra village, distressed by excessive electricity bills, gathered on a single platform and raised strong slogans against the Punjab government and Powercom Minister Sond In response, the SHO of the Phase 8 police station arrived at the scene with a large police force. People had just made preparations to burn the effigy of the Power Minister but the police administration stood poised for action Before the situation could escalate to the burning of an effigy, the SHO of Police Station Phase 8 arrived with a heavy police force; within half an hour, he summoned the Electricity Board SDO to the spot and held discussions.
In view of the villagers' anger, the Powercom SDO accepted their demands. After listening to the people's grievances, he explained that he had only recently arrived for duty in Mohali and was, therefore, unaware of the matter. Kumbra stated that they were tired of issuing ultimatums to the administration through the press; when their grievances went unheard, the government officials panicked as the time approached to burn the minister's effigy, leading to the deployment of a heavy police force in the village of Kumbra even before the burning could take place. On this occasion, each affected family presented electricity bills amounting to two or three lakh rupees to the SDO in the presence of the press; a written application was submitted to the Power Corporation (SAS Nagar, Mohali), accompanied by copies of the bills—which were based on average consumption rather than actual meter readings and were manifold higher than usual—to illustrate the issue.
Speaking on the occasion, Ajaib Singh Bathoi, President of the NREGA Union Punjab, stated that the government is arbitrarily imposing bills across Punjab—a move for which it will have to pay the price in the 2027 elections. Even today, when the people present at the scene began raising slogans against the Punjab government and preparing to block the road, a Powercom SDO arrived just in time and assured them that their demands would be met soon. While appealing to and warning the Punjab Government and Powercom, Kumbra stated that if the issue regarding people's electricity bills is not resolved within ten days, an effigy of the Power Corporation Minister will be burned again at this very spot after the ten-day period. Office bearers and others present on the occasion included Master Banwari Lal, Harchand Singh Jakhwali, Ajaib Singh Bathoi (MNREGA Front Punjab), Lakhvir Singh Bobby, Bapu Labh Singh, Karam Singh Kurri, Gurvinder Singh, Raju, Paramjit Kaur, Karamjit Kaur, Sonia Rani, Lakshmi, former Block Samiti member Gurnam Kaur, Naib Singh, Lila Kaur, Baljinder Singh, Pyare Lal, Bachan Singh, Gurinder Singh, Surinder Singh, Harbans Singh, Daljit Kaur, Mandeep Singh, Hardeep Singh, Mohan Singh, and Gurnam Singh.
