Chandigarh 26 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : BJP National Office In-Charge and MP Tarun Chugh, raising serious questions over the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Fund, said that the Bhagwant Mann government is attempting to use funds meant for the welfare of construction workers and their families for other schemes, amounting to a betrayal of the workers’ interests. He said the BOCW fund is specifically meant for construction workers and their families, including healthcare, children’s education, safety, pension and other welfare needs. Tarun Chugh said that this is not money from the Punjab government’s general budget that the government can use at its discretion for any scheme. This money is specifically meant for the welfare of construction workers. Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal must explain why funds earmarked for workers were sought to be linked with other schemes and why workers’ money was being considered for purposes unrelated to their welfare.
He said that the very money meant to secure education, healthcare, safety and social security for the children and families of construction workers is being eyed for other purposes. If the Punjab government wants to run its schemes, it must make provisions for them from its own budget instead of attempting to use funds specifically earmarked for workers. Tarun Chugh said that the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the objections raised by the Central Government make the matter even more serious. He said the protection of workers’ money and strict adherence to the purpose of the BOCW fund must be ensured, and the Punjab government must give a clear answer to the construction workers of Punjab.
He said Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal must answer the construction workers of Punjab as to why their hard-earned money was sought to be used for other schemes. The money meant for the welfare of workers cannot be used for AAP’s political publicity and self-glorification.
