Power cuts lasting several hours, which plunge Punjab into darkness, cannot be tolerated : Lakhowal
Chandigarh 10 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Harinder Singh Lakhowal, State President of Bhartiya Kisan Union Lakhowal, issued a press note saying that the poor power supply situation in Punjab has exposed the government's power management. The common people, farmers and small traders are suffering due to power cuts lasting for several hours. It is a serious failure of the government to impose unannounced cuts at a time when people need uninterrupted power. At this time, the paddy crop needs a lot of water, but due to several hours of power outages, farmers are unable to water their crops. Farmers get electricity supply for only three to four hours. That too, due to the intermittent and poor power supply, farmers have expressed their fear of a decrease in paddy yield, which is bound to cause economic losses to the farmers.
Due to unannounced power cuts, not only farmers but also the entire community, including traders, in villages and cities, is suffering due to poor supply. The government makes new claims every day, but the ground reality tells something else. Lakhowal demanded the Punjab government to immediately stop unannounced cuts, ensure uninterrupted supply in villages and cities, provide allocated power for agriculture on time and fix accountability for negligence in power management. Lakhowal clarified that the government should prove its performance by improving the electricity supply at the ground level, not just through statements, otherwise the farmer organization will take the path of struggle.
