The Punjab government should allow installments for accumulated domestic electricity bills spanning several months
Chandigarh 14 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In accordance with the directives of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, protest sit-ins were held today outside the offices of the Electricity Board's Superintending Engineers (SEs) and Executive Engineers (XENs) across Punjab to raise a strong voice against the poor state of electricity supply and the difficulties being faced by farmers and the general public. Harinder Singh Lakhowal, State President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), stated in a press release that the electricity supply situation in Punjab has become dire. The paddy crop is currently in the threshing floor and is in dire need of water, However, due to long power outages, farmers are unable to irrigate their crops as needed. Due to this, farmers are apprehensive about reduced crop yields and significant financial losses.
Lakhowal stated that the government's flawed policies and poor electricity supply are driving farmers towards further economic weakness. It is the government's responsibility to ensure an uninterrupted power supply during the final irrigation phase of the paddy crop. He stated that, on the other hand, the general public is also frustrated with the performance of the Electricity Department. Electricity bills have not been received by many households for several months, and now, bills covering multiple months are being sent all at once. Paying a large bill in a lump sum is beyond the means of every family, resulting in a sudden financial burden on the people.
They urged the Punjab government to provide a facility for easy installments to pay the accumulated electricity bills—covering several months—so that the general public could get some relief. State President Lakhowal stated that today's protest demonstrations have been organized across Punjab under the directives of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha. If the government does not immediately address these legitimate demands of the farmers and the general public, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and farmer organizations will intensify the agitation.
