Sangrur/Chandigarh 4 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded the immediate registration of a criminal case and dismissal of all police officers who had tortured and religiously persecuted Sikh youth and anti-drug activist Mohanjit Singh Shero for holding a peaceful protest against chief minister Bhagwant Mann at Shero village in Sunam constituency on September 2. The SAD president, who visited Mohanjit at the civil hospital here, said he was shocked to learn that the anti-drug activist had been subjected to electric shocks; blade cuts had been inflicted on his thighs on which salt was rubbed besides being beaten severely with slippers. He said it was intolerable that the police officers, including DSP Harwinder Singh Khaira, and SHO Prateek Jindal gone to the extent to pulling out hair from Mohanjit’s beard and had even insulted the religious symbols of the Sikh faith besides tearing the Sikh youth’s ‘kachhera’. “The SAD demands criminal cases be registered against both these officers as all as all others who inflicted torture on Mohanjit besides insulting his articles of faith and their forthwith dismissal”.
Asserting that Guru Dokhi CM Bhagwant Mann had turned Punjab into a police state, Badal said Mohanjit had simply waved a black piece of cloth while conducting a democratic protest during a public function addressed by the CM in Shero village. “In return the police was set upon him. Mohanjit told me that the police officers pulled him by his hair and that he could not hear from one ear and that the inhuman beating had even affected his eye sight”. Badal also rang up DGP Gaurav Yadav as well as the DIG Kuldeep Chahal from the spot and asked them to take action against DSP Harwinder Singh Khaira, whom he referred to as the ‘kamau put’ of AAP State president Aman Arora. “In case no action is taken against the police officers we will dismiss them from service once the SAD forms the government in the State next year”.
The SAD president meanwhile also wrote to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to demand a time bound independent probe into the illegal arrest, torture and religious persecution of Mohanjit Singh. Badal urged the NHRC to conduct the probe through its Investigation Division or entrust an officer from outside the State for the same. He also asked the Commission to seek an action taken report in the case from the Punjab Director General of Police besides calling for exemplary action against all police officers who had threatened the life and liberty of the anti-drug activist.
The SAD president also asked the NHRC to pass directions to ensure the preservation of all CCTV footage from the venue of the chief minister’s public function as well as that from transport vehicles, police stations and medical centers pending the probe. Senior party leaders including Arvind Khanna and Winnerjit Singh Goldy also accompanied the SAD president on the occasion.
