Tarun Chugh questions Punjab law and order, says safety of police personnel raises serious concerns
Seeks impartial probe into purported police advisory; asks government to register FIR if document is fake
Chandigarh 23 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : BJP National Office In-Charge and MP Tarun Chugh raised serious questions over the security of police personnel and the law and order situation in Punjab under the Bhagwant Mann government. He said the recent killing of ASI Harjit Singh in Amritsar while returning from PCR duty has raised serious concerns about the safety of those responsible for protecting citizens. Media reports said Harjit Singh was posted with the Police Control Room under Gate Hakima police station and was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants in Amritsar.
Chugh said that a series of attacks on police establishments and other sensitive locations in Punjab has added to concerns over security. The Punjab DGP stated in September 2026 that 43 terror attacks had been reported in Punjab since September 2024, including attacks at police establishments. Chugh has also referred to 22 police stations being targeted in grenade attacks in his public remarks. This figure should be understood as part of his statement, as publicly available sources use different time periods and classifications for such incidents.
Chugh also questioned the controversy surrounding a purported security advisory that surfaced on social media following the killing of ASI Harjit Singh. The document uploaded in the matter bears the heading of the Office of the Inspector General of Police, Border Range, Amritsar, carries the date September 18, 2026 and diary number 24577-80. It contains detailed security instructions concerning police personnel travelling to and from duty, including precautions regarding movement and the Buddy Pair System.
Punjab Police, however, has publicly rejected the purported advisory as fake and stated that no such official advisory was issued. Chugh said that this makes an investigation into the origin of the document even more necessary. He asked the state government to establish how a document carrying the name and format of an official police office, along with a diary number and date, came into circulation. He further demanded that if the document is indeed fake, an FIR should be registered and those responsible for creating and circulating it should be identified.
Chugh said Punjab is a sensitive border state and security incidents involving police personnel and police establishments cannot be treated casually. He called upon the Bhagwant Mann government to provide clear answers on the security of police personnel, the law and order situation, and the origin and authenticity of the purported advisory.
