Preparations are on for the protest being held in front of Municipal Corporation Sector 17 against the layoff of CMC Public Health employees.

Chandigarh 31 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Federation of UT Employees and Workers Chandigarh has decided to stage a protest in front of Municipal Corporation Sector 17 against the decision of CMC Public Health to retrench more than 300 employees of Tube Wells and sack them without notice. In preparation for the strike, a series of gate meetings are being held in different offices. In this regard, a notice has been issued to the Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation. In the notice, a discussion has been held regarding the protest being organized by the Federation in Sector 17 and a demand has been made to immediately reinstate the sacked employees. In the notice, condemning the firing of the employees, it has been said that the demands of the MC employees including the timely payment of salary have been pending for a long time on which no one is ready to pay heed, due to which there is an atmosphere of restlessness among the employees. In the notice, it was strongly condemned that outsourced employees who had been working for more than 10-12 years were fired without any notice and it was alleged that the contractors and officials have discriminated by firing the outsourced employees and have secretly adjusted their favourites who had been in the job for 2-3 years and new employees hired by the contractor in their place which is very condemnable and is a violation of the rules laid down by the administration. He said that the contractors and officers are blaming each other and demanded a high level investigation into this. In the meeting, concern was expressed that the poor outsourced employees working for a long time are having to pay the price for the officers to please their different bosses and the employees are under stress. Alleged that under pressure, the corporation officials are flouting the rules set by the administration and they should be held accountable. In this regard, on 21st July 2025, a delegation of the Federation met the Corporation Commissioner and informed him about the entire incident and demanded the reinstatement of the employees who were fired in a discriminatory manner and informed him about the status quo and told him that as the principal employer, it is his responsibility to give justice to the employees. But it is very sad that the Municipal Commissioner has clearly refused to interfere in this matter and thus has broken the morale of the employees. On one hand, the employees are suffering due to this kind of behaviour and on the other hand, the services of the departments providing essential services will be disrupted, the entire responsibility of which will be of the Municipal Corporation administration. This decision of the corporation will encourage opportunism and nepotism and ignoring the rules will lead to violation of labor law, which needs to be looked into In the meeting of the Federation's executive body, the administration was warned that if the nepotism game is not stopped and senior employees are not reinstated soon, then the Federation will declare a direct struggle in a huge dharna in front of Municipal Corporation Sector 17 on Wednesday, 6th August. The stubborn and totally anti-employee attitude of the Municipal Corporation officials will be responsible for the inconvenience caused to the general public due to this conflict.
