Harmful effects of tobacco use highlighted
Chandigarh 30 May ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : On World No Tobacco Day, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, raised awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and emphasized the importance of quitting to prevent life-threatening diseases, especially cancer. Dr. Akanksha, Consultant - Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, said , “ Tobacco consumption-whether through smoking or smokeless forms is one of the leading causes of cancer and other serious health conditions, including heart disease and lung disorders. Despite widespread awareness, its use continues to be a major public health concern.”
She further said, “Tobacco is one of the biggest risk factors for multiple types of cancer, including oral, lung, and throat cancers. The good news is that quitting tobacco at any stage can significantly reduce these risks. Awareness, early screening, and timely intervention can save lives.” She also highlighted that many cases of cancer linked to tobacco are preventable and stressed the importance of regular health check-ups, especially for individuals with a history of tobacco use.
The hospital encourages people to take a step towards a healthier life by quitting tobacco and seeking professional help if needed. Support systems, counselling, and medical guidance can make the journey to quitting easier and more effective.
