It is noteworthy that Giani Raghbir Singh, who started his service as a Pathi Singh in the Shiromani Committee, taught the Sikh code of conduct to the Amrit Abhilakhis for about 19 years while serving the Panj Pyares at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He was appointed as the Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib on 21 April 2014, while on 24 August 2017, he was entrusted with the responsibility of the acting Jathedar of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib. Later on June 16, 2023, he also received the service of Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Head Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. Despite serving in such important positions and being knowledgeable about Sikh code of conduct, his silence on this matter has sparked controversy.
According to page number 15 of the Panth-approved Sikh code of conduct, after entering the Gurdwara, one should first bow before Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and then invoke the blessings of the Guru-like Sadh Sangat. It is clear in the etiquette that it is permissible for a person to sit separately on a cushion, seat, chair, post, or bed in the congregation. Apart from this, the Hukamnamas and orders issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib on 20 April 1998, 8 July 2009 and 22 November 2013 have also directed the Sangat and the administrators to sit equally and have langar while sitting on chairs or benches.
