Opposition to the proposal for a digital currency-based system for DBT ration card holders; former Senior Deputy Mayor Jasveer Singh Bunty raises concerns
Chandigarh 6 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : An atmosphere of concern and dissatisfaction prevails among the public regarding the changes proposed by the Chandigarh Administration to the Public Distribution System (ration system) for DBT ration card holders. Under the proposed system, instead of providing actual ration supplies, an equivalent monetary amount would be provided via the 'PNB Digital Rupee' app—a form of digital currency that can only be used at shops designated by the administration. Reacting to this matter, former Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh, Jasveer Singh Bunty, stated that this system could create numerous practical difficulties for the common people, especially for poor and needy families. He noted that many beneficiaries are not fully familiar with technical resources or digital payment systems, which could lead to challenges in obtaining essential food items.
Bunty remarked that the current ration distribution system directly provides food grains to beneficiaries, thereby ensuring food security for their families. If this is replaced by a digital currency system restricted to specific shops, it could adversely affect people's convenience, choices, and access. He appealed to the Administrator of Chandigarh and the Governor of Punjab to reconsider this proposed system and to continue providing rations directly to cardholders, as was done previously. He emphasized that the opinions of the general public, social organizations, and public representatives must be sought before implementing any new system.
Bunty urged the administration to prioritize the public interest and refrain from implementing any system that causes inconvenience to the poor and needy sections of society. He affirmed that he would continue to raise this issue to safeguard the public's convenience and rights, and would strongly present the matter before the concerned officials if necessary.
