Woman with advanced breast cancer, severe cardiac condition gets a new lease of life at Livasa Hospital Amritsar
Amritsar 11 June ( PDL ) : A 59-year-old woman, diagnosed with advanced breast cancer with lung metastasis and critically reduced cardiac function got a new lease of life after a successful treatment at Livasa Hospital, Amritsar. The woman was presented with a lump in her left breast. Detailed evaluation confirmed HER2-positive, hormone receptor-negative breast cancer that had already spread to the lungs. She had a prior history of coronary artery disease and coronary stenting.
The case posed a major therapeutic challenge as her left ventricular ejection fraction was only 18%, significantly increasing the risk associated with standard anti-HER2 targeted therapies, which are known to potentially worsen cardiac function. After extensive multidisciplinary discussions involving oncology, cardiology, imaging specialists, and critical care teams, the experts at Livasa Hospital Amritsar devised a carefully individualized treatment strategy under the supervision of medical oncology consultant, Dr. Amritjot Singh Randhawa.
Dr. Randhawa said that considering the patient’s fragile cardiac condition, we opted for nanoparticle paclitaxel chemotherapy along with intensive cardiac monitoring and optimized supportive care. The patient successfully completed four cycles of chemotherapy and demonstrated an outstanding response. Follow-up PET-CT evaluation revealed a complete metabolic response with no evidence of active disease. Importantly, she tolerated the treatment extremely well without any major complications despite her significant cardiac comorbidity.
