CU Punjab Faculty and Researchers Represent India at International Conference in Kazakhstan
Bathinda 2 July ( PDL ) : A four-member delegation from the Central University of Punjab (CUP), Bathinda, successfully represented the University during an academic visit to Kazakhstan from June 16 to 21, 2026, reinforcing its growing international academic presence and strengthening educational ties between India and Kazakhstan. The delegation participated in the prestigious Central Eurasian Studies Society (CESS) 2026 Annual Conference, and held a series of high-level academic and diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening India–Kazakhstan educational cooperation. The delegation, led by Prof. Jagmeet Bawa from the Department of South and Central Asian Studies, comprised Dr. Sandeep Singh, Assistant Professor, and research scholars Mohit Verma and Nitish Kumar Ahlawat. The team participated in the CESS 2026 Annual Conference hosted by Nazarbayev University in Astana, which brought together more than 340 scholars and policy experts from over 35 countries.
At the conference, Prof. Jagmeet Bawa chaired an international panel on Central Asian security, while Dr. Sandeep Singh served as the panel discussant, contributing to discussions on emerging regional security issues. On the sidelines of the conference, the delegation held productive meetings with senior faculty members of Nazarbayev University, including Prof. Hélène Thibault, Dr. Dan Scarborough, and Prof. Uli Schamiloglu. The discussions focused on faculty and student exchange programmes, collaborative research, joint conferences, curriculum development, and academic publications, laying the groundwork for future institutional partnerships.The delegation further met officials of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC), Embassy of India, Astana, where they presented preliminary findings of their field research on India's soft power diplomacy in Kazakhstan. The research was appreciated by Embassy officials, who expressed interest in future academic collaborations. During the visit, the delegation was hosted by Mrs. Nalini Singhal, Director, SVCC, and Mr. Arvind, Head of Chancery and Education Programme, Embassy of India, Astana, for discussions on strengthening India–Kazakhstan academic engagement. Following the conference, the delegation visited Caspian University in Almaty to explore avenues for institutional cooperation. They also participated in the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations organised by the Embassy of India, where they were welcomed by His Excellency Mr. Y. K. Sailas Thangal, Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan.
An important component of the visit was the delegation's interaction with members of the Indian diaspora in Kazakhstan. These engagements provided valuable primary data on India's soft power, public diplomacy, and foreign policy, which will support future research by the Department of South and Central Asian Studies. The visit has helped strengthen the Central University of Punjab's international academic network and created new opportunities for collaborative research, faculty and student exchanges, and institutional partnerships. The delegation expressed its gratitude to the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor and the University administration for their encouragement and support in promoting the University's global academic engagement.
