Punjab Government Should Work for Punjab’s Progress Instead of Acting Like a Property Dealer : Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Bharpur Singh Dhandra
Chandigarh 3 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Senior Vice President of Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjeet, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, and General Secretary, Bharpur Singh Dhandra, in a written press statement, criticized the Punjab Government’s new Land Pooling Policy. They stated that instead of thinking like property dealers and focusing on earning profits, the government should work for the overall development and prosperity of Punjab. They said that Punjab’s population growth is not so high as to justify the development of new residential colonies. Therefore, there is no need for the government to acquire fertile agricultural land from farmers and replace it with concrete jungles.
Punjab is an agriculture-based state and urgently needs agriculture-based industries. Such industries would not only strengthen the state’s economy but also create more employment opportunities. When people have stable sources of income, they can arrange proper housing for themselves without government intervention. The leaders further stated that the government should not seize cultivable land from farmers and engage in profiteering by selling developed plots at higher prices in the name of development. The primary responsibility of any government is to create sustainable employment opportunities for its people, not to lure them into giving up their land and push them towards economic hardship.
Both leaders also pointed out that the existing cities, which are already expanding in an unplanned manner, are facing severe shortages of basic civic amenities. Residents are struggling with inadequate drinking water supply, poor sewerage systems, and unreliable electricity. Despite purchasing expensive homes, many people are forced to live in miserable conditions. They questioned what kind of “heaven” the government hopes to build by taking away farmers’ land under such circumstances. They added that those in government are themselves sons of Punjab and should stand with the people rather than becoming instruments of the land mafia. Chhotepur and Dhandra demanded that the government immediately withdraw and cancel the new Land Pooling Policy.
