Conveners, executive members, and employees from various employee organizations and federations participated in the protest rally. Chandigarh 21 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Harinder Singh Lakhowal, state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union Lakhowal, said that stopping farmers who were going to raise their voice peacefully and democratically at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar shows the authoritarian attitude of the BJP government at the center. He said that the Constitution of India gives every citizen the right to register their protest peacefully. Stopping farmers from going to Delhi, putting up barricades and trying to suppress their voice with the help of police force is against the spirit of democracy.
Lakhowal said that treating the country’s food provider like criminals cannot be justified under any circumstances. The government should listen to the demands of the farmers and not try to deprive them of their democratic rights. He said that the Bharatiya Kisan Union Lakhowal strongly condemns this dictatorial attitude and appeals to the central government to respect democratic values. Further, state president Harinder Singh Lakhowal said that as per the call of the United Kisan Morcha, toll plazas across Punjab will be made free on July 22 from 12 noon to 3 pm. In areas where there are no toll plazas, peaceful protests will be held in front of the houses of key leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He said that these protests are being held in protest against the India-US trade agreement being made by the central government. The farmer organizations are concerned that such agreements may have an impact on the country's farmers, agriculture and rural economy. Therefore, the central government should take such important decisions only after consulting the farmers. Lakhowal appealed to all the farmers, workers and common people of Punjab to participate in large numbers in the protest programs on July 22 and raise their voices in a democratic and peaceful manner so that the interests of the farmers and the country can be protected.
