Another Complex Cardiac Intervention Successfully Performed at Paras Health Panchkula
Advanced renal denervation performed on a 77-year-old patient with severe resistant hypertension; blood pressure reduced from above 200/110 mmHg to around 160/95 mmHg
Panchkula 26 August ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Doctors at Paras Health Panchkula successfully performed an advanced Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure on a 77-year-old man with severely resistant hypertension. His blood pressure had remained above 200/110 mmHg for nearly two years despite seven anti-hypertensive medicines at full doses. Following the procedure, his blood pressure reduced to around 160/95 mmHg while on five medications, with further improvement expected over time.
The procedure was performed by a team led by Dr. (Maj. Gen.) Naveen Aggarwal, Chairman – Structural Heart Disease & EP Studies, Paras Health Panchkula. The intervention was completed on both renal arteries under conscious sedation in less than an hour. The patient was discharged after a one-day hospital stay. A resident of Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, the patient also had diabetes and early Parkinsonism. Despite multiple anti-hypertensive medicines, his blood pressure remained uncontrolled. Following detailed evaluation, the medical team found him suitable for renal denervation due to severe resistant hypertension and inadequate response to medication.

Medication and lifestyle changes remain the first line of treatment, while renal denervation can provide an additional option in selected cases.”
Renal denervation is a minimally invasive procedure in which a specialised catheter is guided through an artery to the renal arteries supplying the kidneys. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered at multiple points to reduce the activity of overactive nerves around the arteries, which play a role in blood pressure regulation. RDN is considered only after other possible causes of hypertension, such as renal artery narrowing, hormonal disorders and other underlying conditions, have been evaluated. It may be considered for appropriately selected patients whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite suitable medical treatment. The patient is being followed up monthly and has been advised to maintain a biweekly home blood pressure record. The treating team expects further improvement over time, with medication requirements to be reviewed according to his clinical response.
