Goldy was detained by the police during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Sangrur. Warring said that Goldy had announced in advance that he had certain questions to ask to the Chief Minister. However, much before the Chief Minister’s visit, Goldy was detained and prevented from asking any questions. “I wonder why Bhagwant Mann is afraid of Goldy?” Warring asked, while telling him that today he may be able to use the Punjab Police but within a few months more once the code of conduct is in place, how can he stop people from asking questions. Pay ₹5 lakh in licence fees, still face challans every Sunday: Used-car dealers up in arms
Car Dealers Association questions Municipal Corporation action, asks: “If licence fee is being charged, why are vehicles being challaned?”
Chandigarh 20 September ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Growing resentment is being reported among used-car dealers in Chandigarh over vehicles being challaned every Sunday despite dealers paying around ₹5 lakh in licence fees for the market. S.K. Sood, Secretary of the Chandigarh Car Dealers Association, questioned the Municipal Corporation’s action, saying dealers are required to pay substantial licence fees for operating in the designated used-car market, yet vehicles parked at the authorised location are being challaned on Sundays.
Sood said dealers are required to park their vehicles at the designated site between Saturday and Sunday and pay the prescribed licence fee to the Municipal Corporation for the arrangement. However, despite complying with the licensing system, enforcement teams arrive on Sundays and issue challans to vehicles parked there. Sood said that if the Municipal Corporation has introduced a licensing system for the used-car market and is collecting regular fees from dealers, licence holders should also be provided clear and hassle-free parking arrangements during the permitted period.
“Dealers are already bearing licence fees and several other business-related expenses. Repeated challans are adding an unnecessary financial burden,” he said, questioning the basis on which vehicles are being penalised when parking arrangements are linked to a fee-based licensing system. Sood further alleged that from Monday to Friday, outsiders are allegedly using parking space by paying a nominal ₹14 parking fee and conducting car-selling activities, while local dealers who have formally obtained licences and paid the prescribed fees face action on Sundays.
He urged the administration to clarify the entire arrangement and ensure that uniform rules are applied to everyone operating in the market. The association said it was willing to cooperate with the Municipal Corporation, but questioned the rationale of collecting licence fees on one hand and taking action against vehicles parked under the same arrangement on the other.
The association has demanded an immediate stop to what it termed unnecessary challans against vehicles belonging to licensed dealers and sought clear written guidelines on the parking arrangements. Sood warned that if the administration failed to resolve the issue at the earliest and provide relief to dealers, the association would be compelled to consider a prolonged struggle to protect the interests of its members.
