Kejriwal, Who Guaranteed to Eliminate Drugs in Three Months, Must Explain How Drugs Have Reached Children in Punjab; Drug Mafia Thrives Under Mann Government’s Watch : Tarun Chugh

Suspected Drug Overdose Claims Life of Gurwinder Singh; Video of 10-Year-Old Using Drugs and Rescue of Two Minors Expose Punjab’s Grim Reality; Mann Government Must Answer for the Cases of Jhota, Mohanjeet Singh, Gulzar Singh and Bikramjit Singh

Chandigarh 24 October ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : BJP National Headquarters In-Charge and Member of Parliament Tarun Chugh launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government over the continuing drug crisis in Punjab, stating that Arvind Kejriwal’s guarantee to eliminate drugs within three months has become a major question facing the state’s youth and families. The suspected drug overdose death of 20-year-old Gurwinder Singh in Kapurthala, a video showing a 10-year-old child using drugs, and the rescue of two minor brothers expose the alarming depth of Punjab’s drug crisis. At a time when the government had promised a secure future for the state’s younger generation, parents are struggling to save their children while the government’s claims face serious questions.

Chugh said that, according to a report by The Tribune, Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Gazipur village, was found unconscious near a tubewell in Toti village and was declared dead upon reaching the hospital. His brother, Amandeep Singh, was also hospitalised due to health problems linked to drug use. The deceased’s father expressed serious concern over the alleged open sale of drugs in the area and the deaths of young people. Meanwhile, after a video showing a 10-year-old child using drugs surfaced, the police rescued two brothers aged 10 and 13. Chugh said that when the drug menace reaches innocent children, the government must explain what its anti-drug campaign has actually achieved on the ground.

He said the questions before the people of Punjab are straightforward. What happened to the guarantee of eliminating drugs within three months? Who will be held accountable for the death of Parminder Singh Jhota, who had raised his voice against drugs? When will justice and accountability be ensured in the cases involving the assault on Mohanjeet Singh and the killings of Gulzar Singh and Bikramjit Singh? The government must provide clear answers. The people of Punjab need justice, not assurances, and decisive action against drug trafficking networks.

Chugh said that breaking the drug supply chain must be an administrative priority, particularly in areas such as Toti and Lattianwal, where the drug problem has come to light. Action must extend from street-level peddlers to the networks operating behind them. The government must disclose what action has been taken against major drug trafficking networks and what effective arrangements have been made for the treatment and rehabilitation of children and young people affected by addiction. Announcements of anti-drug campaigns are not enough; results must be visible to the public.

He said that the drug crisis in Punjab cannot be separated from the deteriorating law-and-order situation and the menace of gangsters. The government must also answer questions surrounding interviews of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi from inside jail and allegations of a nexus between the police and gangsters. Ensuring public safety and taking lawful action against criminal networks are the government’s responsibilities. The people of Punjab deserve to know at what level accountability is being fixed for action against drugs and organised crime.

Chugh said that the Mann government must also answer for Punjab’s rising debt, illegal mining and the pending dearness allowance of government employees and pensioners. With the state’s debt exceeding ₹5 lakh crore, when will employees and pensioners receive their pending DA? Where is the account of the claims that illegal mining would be stopped and generate ₹20,000 crore in revenue? The government must clarify its position on the sale of public-sector institutions. It must also respond to allegations that deductions of ₹200 per quintal on 180 lakh metric tonnes of paddy have caused farmers losses amounting to ₹3,600 crore. Questions concerning the future of Punjab’s farmers, employees and youth cannot be ignored.

Chugh demanded that the independent investigation into Gurwinder Singh’s death and the drug supply chain be completed within a time-bound framework, and that those found responsible be prosecuted in accordance with the law. Children and young people affected by addiction must receive proper treatment, rehabilitation and support so that other families do not have to endure similar tragedies. Chugh said that those who came to power promising a drug-free Punjab must now account for their promises. When a 20-year-old loses his life, when 10-year-old children are exposed to drugs, and when questions of accountability persist in cases involving those who raised their voices against the drug menace, Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann must explain what became of their guarantee. Punjab needs decisive action against the drug mafia and a secure future for its younger generation, not hollow promises.
