‘Jal Chetna’ Workshop Highlights Water Crisis, Promotes Conservation in Patiala

Patiala 1 May ( PDL ) : A “Jal Chetna” workshop was successfully organised on Thursday at School of Eminence Pheel Khana, by the I J Doda Foundation, led by Jonita Doda. The programme was held in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology and the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change under environmental compensation funds. The workshop focused on pressing issues such as water conservation, pollution, and groundwater depletion. Highlighting the gravity of the situation, speakers noted that Punjab is witnessing rapid groundwater decline, with over 75% of its blocks categorised as over-exploited. References were also made to earlier warnings by NITI Aayog about severe water stress in several Indian cities.

Students, teachers, and eco-club members actively participated in interactive sessions with experts, gaining insights into sustainable water practices and environmental responsibility. Addressing the gathering, Jonita Doda also spoke about the emerging impact of El Niño, cautioning that changing climate patterns could further aggravate water scarcity in India. She referred to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department, which have indicated potential El Niño conditions, often associated with weaker monsoons and reduced rainfall.

She said, “Water conservation is no longer a choice but a necessity. Through ‘Jal Chetna’, we aim to inspire young minds to adopt responsible habits and take practical steps to protect our most precious resource for future generations.” The District Education Office, Patiala played a key role in coordinating the event.
