Disaster Management Awareness Lecture Inspires Interns and Participants.
Chandigarh 18 June ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Environment Society of India (ESI), Chandigarh, organized an informative and interactive Disaster Management Awareness Lecture at Karuna Sadan, Sector 11-B, Chandigarh today. The programme commenced with a welcome address by N.K. Jhingan, Secretary, Environment Society of India, who welcomed the chief guest, resource persons, interns and participants. He emphasized that disaster management awareness is an essential component of modern life and that every citizen should possess basic knowledge and skills to protect life and property during emergencies, accidents, fires, floods and other natural calamities. Poonam Malik, Nodal Officer, Indian Red Cross Society, Chandigarh Branch, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The technical session was conducted by Sushil Tank, Training Supervisor, Indian Red Cross Society, Chandigarh Branch. He sensitized the participants about various aspects of disaster management and demonstrated simple life-saving techniques that can be adopted during emergencies. He explained how to assist accident victims, respond effectively in cases of fire, handle gas leakage incidents and provide immediate assistance in cases of snake bites. He informed the participants that nearly 90 percent of snake species found in India are non-venomous and that panic often becomes a major cause of complications. Tank emphasized the importance of following a systematic approach in emergency situations. Drawing an analogy from computers, he explained the significance of the three stages—Input, Process and Output—and stressed that people often ignore the critical “process” stage, which can lead to serious consequences while handling emergencies.
Addressing the interns, Poonam Malik advised them to respect their parents and elders, maintain transparency in their actions, and dedicate themselves to serving humanity. She encouraged the students to make social service a regular part of their lives and contribute positively to society. The programme was attended by student interns from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra; Chandigarh University, Gharuan; Government Post Graduate College, Sector 11, Chandigarh; DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh; DAV College, Karnal; and IIT Mumbai, along with members of the Environment Society of India. Er. Hem Raj Satija, Vice President, ESI, highlighted the importance of courage, preparedness and awareness in saving lives during emergencies. He observed that many lives are lost due to lack of knowledge and timely action.
Ravinder Nath, Treasurer, ESI and Member of the Administrator’s Advisory Committee, encouraged the students to disseminate the knowledge gained during the workshop among their families, friends and communities so that a larger section of society could benefit from such awareness programmes. Ashok Kumar, Member, ESI, also addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for public awareness and community participation in disaster preparedness. The student interns displayed keen interest throughout the session and actively participated in the interaction programme. They raised several practical questions relating to first aid, emergency response, fire safety measures, road accidents, snake bites, disaster preparedness and methods of protecting life and property during emergencies. The students also shared their personal experiences, including incidents of fire and accidents witnessed by them, making the interaction lively and meaningful. Their enthusiasm reflected a strong desire to learn life-saving skills and contribute to community welfare. The participants appreciated the practical demonstrations and informative presentations delivered during the programme and expressed their desire for more such training programmes in future.
