Grand Jagannath Rath Yatra Held in Chandigarh with Great Devotion
Chandigarh 16 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Utkal Sanskrutik Sangh, an association of Jagannath Mandir, Sector 31, took out the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra from the temple on Thursday. Utkal Sanskrutik Sangh, a registered organisation of people from Odisha residing in and around Chandigarh, continues to recreate the spirit and grandeur of the world-famous Rath Yatra of Puri for the people of the City Beautiful at Lord Jagannath Temple, Sector 31-D, Chandigarh. Devotees gathered in large numbers to participate in the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra. The beautifully decorated chariot carrying the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra was taken out amid devotional chants of "Jai Jagannath" and the Hare Krishna Mahamantra.
Special pooja and rituals commenced at 9:30 a.m. After the deities were ceremoniously placed on the chariots, the sacred Chhera Pahara ritual was performed. One of the most significant traditions associated with the Jagannath Rath Yatra, the ritual symbolises equality before the Lord, as the King sweeps around the chariots with a gold-handled broom, signifying that all devotees are equal in the eyes of Lord Jagannath. After passing through Sectors 32, 29, 30, 20, 21, 34, 44, 45 and 47, the yatra concluded at the temple.
This year's Rath Yatra was flagged off by Deeprawa Lakra, IAS, Finance Secretary, Chandigarh Administration (UT), as the Chief Guest, along with Shyam Lal Bansal, Mayor, Panchkula, who joined devotees in seeking the blessings of Lord Jagannath and inaugurated the procession. Among the distinguished guests present were Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) Digambar Behera, Former Dean (Research) and Former Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGIMER Chandigarh; Prof. (Dr.) Radhakanta Ratho, Dean (Academics), PGIMER Chandigarh; Dr. Sushanta Kumar Sahu, Associate Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, PGIMER Chandigarh; Manoj Kumar Mahapatra, and several other eminent personalities, who participated in the celebrations and offered prayers to the Lord.
The procession witnessed enthusiastic participation from devotees of all ages, who pulled the sacred chariot while singing bhajans and kirtans. The atmosphere was filled with spirituality as flowers were showered on the chariot and devotees offered prayers for peace, prosperity and the well-being of society. Volunteers ensured smooth arrangements for the procession and distributed prasadam among the devotees. The Rath Yatra reflected the spirit of faith, unity and devotion, bringing together people from different communities to celebrate the divine journey of Lord Jagannath. Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the most revered Hindu festivals, symbolising the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. Similar celebrations are held across India and around the world, including Chandigarh. The Rath returned to Maa Gundicha Temple within the premises of Lord Jagannath Temple after covering nearly 8 km across different sectors of Chandigarh. Utkal Sanskrutik Sangh also served langar and prasadam to thousands of devotees as part of the celebrations.
