Hope for relief from heat: Rain warning issued in Punjab today, heavy rain likely in 13 districts

The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur in 13 districts of Punjab from July 20 to July 22, which will provide relief from the heat

Chandigarh 19 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A warning of heavy rain has been issued in Punjab for the next five days from Sunday. The worst impact has been felt in the border district of Pathankot, where the Chakki river flowing from Himachal Pradesh is in spate. The water level of the river reached nearly nine metres on Saturday morning, threatening a crucial bridge on the Delhi-Katra railway line. Meanwhile, light rain fell in Chandigarh and the Tri-City area on Sunday morning.

The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in 13 districts of Punjab and five districts of Himachal Pradesh from July 20 to July 22. This is likely to cause the temperature in Punjab to drop by five degrees. Intermittent rain is expected in many districts throughout the day. This is expected to provide relief from the humidity and heat experienced over the past few days. This rain is also considered beneficial for farmers, although the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas cannot be ruled out.
The rising water level of the Chakki River in Pathankot remains a matter of concern. Locals allege that the construction of a retaining wall worth crores of rupees to protect the railway bridge was not completed before the monsoon season. Now the water has reached behind the wall from the broken part. Last August, flooding from the same river damaged the airport approach road and the Jalandhar-Jammu National Highway bridge.Residents fear that if the safety work is not completed in time, there could be significant damage to the railway property and surrounding areas.
In Punjab, heavy rain is likely in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Rupnagar on Sunday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Patiala and Mohali between July 20 and 22. No weather warning has been issued for the southwestern districts of Fazilka, Ferozepur, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala and Sangrur. However, these districts are expected to remain cloudy with light rain at some places. The Meteorological Department says that monsoon activity has started to intensify again, and good rainfall is expected in most parts of the state in the coming days. Continuous rain will lower the temperature and provide relief from humidity.
