Chandigarh 31 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : In reply to a starred question raised in the Rajya Sabha by BJP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has confirmed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government sanctioned 204 projects worth a total of Rs. 4,485 crore for Punjab's three major cities — Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana — under the Smart City Mission. Chugh said this figure is clear proof that over the last 12 years the Modi Government has placed Punjab's urban development at the very top of its priorities, sparing no effort to make the state's cities modern, well-equipped and future-ready.
Giving a city-wise account, Chugh stated that an investment of Rs. 1,911 crore was made across 44 projects in Amritsar, Rs. 1,186 crore across 78 projects in Jalandhar, and Rs. 1,388 crore across 82 projects in Ludhiana. He said this investment is not confined to any single sector but touches every aspect that directly affects the daily life of the common citizen — parking, sports infrastructure, solid waste management, water supply, green-area development and urban amenities. The National General Secretary said that, as per the Ministry's reply, by 31 March 2026 as many as 190 of the 204 projects — that is, 93 per cent of all projects, worth Rs. 4,148 crore — had already been completed across these three cities. Chugh said this 93 per cent completion rate is not merely a statistic but proof of the Modi Government's work culture, in which announcements do not remain confined to files but reach the ground, delivering real benefits to the people.
Naming the flagship projects, Chugh highlighted the automated multi-level car parking at Kairon Market in Amritsar; the Burlton Park Sports Hub and the city-level solid waste management project in Jalandhar; and in Ludhiana, the state-of-the-art flood lighting system at Guru Nanak Stadium, the bio-remediation of legacy waste at the Jamalpur dump, and the horticultural development of Nehru Rose Garden. He said these projects have given Punjab's cities a new identity on every front — sports, sanitation, traffic and the environment. Chugh said that while the Central Government is completing projects worth thousands of crore in Punjab's cities, the people can also see how much local cooperation and will are required to translate these development works into reality on the ground. He said the Modi Government provided all three — resources, resolve and structure — and today the citizens of Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana are directly reaping the benefits of these modern facilities.
In conclusion, Chugh said that Prime Minister Modi's dedication to Punjab needs no introduction. He said that carrying development to every city, every citizen and every family of Punjab is the resolve of the BJP and the Modi Government, and this work will move ahead with even greater speed in the coming years. He expressed confidence that with this strong support from the Centre, Punjab will soon stand in the front rank of the country's leading developed states.
