Punjab Congress SC Department Condemns Brutal Lathi Charge on Safai Karamcharis, Gives Government Two-Day Ultimatum Chandigarh 24 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The Punjab Pradesh Congress Scheduled Caste Department has strongly condemned the brutal lathi charge on protesting safai karamcharis in Barnala, calling it an inhuman assault on the dignity, constitutional rights and self-respect of Dalit workers. The Department alleged that, on the orders of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Police used excessive force against peacefully protesting safai karamcharis, leaving several injured. The Department demanded the immediate suspension and strict legal action against all police officers responsible for the brutality. Chandigarh 24 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today condemned the arrogance of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and his silence over the police brutalities on the safai karamcharis in Barnala. Warring asked Mann how could he be so indifferent towards the same safai karamcharis who were holding the broom, his party symbol. “Are you not ashamed that your police broke those hands and heads which were holding the broom?” he asked the Chief Minister.
The PCC president declared that he will be filing a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the police brutalities which amount to grave human rights violations of the safai karamcharis. He noted that the Mann’s police had not only let loose a reign of terror on the safai karamcharis, but against all sections of the society be they students, the electricians, farmers or the MGNREGA workers.
Warring asked Mann to apologise to the safai karamcharis and also take strict action against the guilty cops who brutally manhandled them. The PCC president also questioned the silence of the Punjab SC Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi over the Barnala incident. He pointed out, if anyone deserved attention and protection of the SC Commission it was the safai karamcharis and yet the chairman had stayed quiet. Warring dared Garhi that if he had courage and any concern for the safai karamcharis, he should register cases against the guilty cops who used brute and barbaric force against the safai karamcharis.
