From Village Roots to Academic Heights: Dr Harjinder Singh Rose’s Book Explores Truths of Indian Academia, launched at Chandigarh Press Club 

An insider account of systemic challenges, ethics  and institutional realities  

Chandigarh 21 April ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : A deeply reflective and thought-provoking memoir by noted academician Dr Harjinder Singh Rose, titled “From Jaitewali to the Halls of Academia: Odyssey: Roots to Heights”, was released at Chandigarh Press Club on  Tuesday (April 23). More than a conventional life story, the book offers an unfiltered narrative of the Indian academic ecosystem with its strengths, contradictions and evolving challenges through the lived experiences of the author.

At its core, the memoir is not merely a chronicle of achievements, but an introspective account of the “pain and pleasure” embedded in a lifelong journey through education. Dr. Rose, born and raised in the modest surroundings of Jaitlewali village in Punjab, traces through his narrative how circumstance and opportunity converge to shape an individual’s destiny.   The book captures the emotional and social realities of rural India, including the gradual erosion of traditional community structures  while underscoring the enduring value of education as a vehicle for transformation.

Across 478 pages and 29 chapters in the book, Dr. Rose confronts uncomfortable realities from academic inbreeding and declining research ethics to systemic inefficiencies and bureaucratic overreach. Based on his real-life experiences, he illustrates how institutional decisions, leadership styles and policy frameworks shape the quality and direction of higher education. He addressed practices like frequent leadership changes, weakened merit in appointments  and the lack of continuity in institutions which offered a clear, insider perspective grounded in both analysis and experience.

  The book also brings out the broader purpose of academic life beyond classrooms and laboratories. It gently underscores the importance of mentorship, intellectual honesty, and the responsibility educators hold toward society. Through his reflections on mentoring students, fostering a research culture, and promoting a scientific outlook, Dr. Rose conveys meaningful lessons on integrity, perseverance, and ethical conduct in a clear and relatable manner. These findings made the book relevant not just for scholars, but for anyone engaged in knowledge-driven professions. The book recounts formative struggles like long commutes for education, professional setbacks  and even prolonged personal battles which shaped the author’s outlook on life. Dr Rose composition emerges as a compelling blend of autobiography, institutional critique , and philosophical reflection. It is a book that not only narrates a journey but also invites readers to question, reflect and reimagine the purpose and practice of education in contemporary times.
