Chandigarh 8 July ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Young Chandigarh-based artist Kanishka Puri has been awarded the internationally acclaimed En Foco Fellowship, a prestigious honor recognizing artists whose creative practice offers compelling perspectives on society, identity, memory, and the human experience. Kanishka’s artistic practice explores personal archives, matrilineal histories, and the relationship between humans and nature. Drawing on her background in science, her work uniquely bridges biology, scientific inquiry, and contemporary art.
In her recent projects, Kanishka has been experimenting with Physarum polycephalum (slime mold), a single-celled organism renowned for its remarkable problem-solving abilities despite lacking a brain or nervous system. Through this unusual medium, she investigates the interconnectedness of nature, memory, and human existence. Her work focuses on family histories, women’s lived experiences, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It also highlights the often-overlooked labor of women and non-human organisms, drawing attention to forms of care and work frequently rendered invisible within social and capitalist systems.
