Farmers Alarmed by Trump’s Statement on Trade Deal; Over 100 Farmers’ Organisations Warn of Nationwide Agitation
New Delhi/Chandigarh 22 October ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : US President Donald Trump’s statement regarding the India–US trade deal has put Indian farmers on alert. Today, a meeting of over 100 farmers’ organisations was held in New Delhi. The meeting unanimously resolved that if the government signs a draft trade deal that harms the interests of Indian farmers, farmers will be compelled to launch a nationwide agitation. It may be recalled that a day earlier, US President Donald Trump had stated that India and the United States were very close to reaching a trade deal and that the deal would be different from previous agreements.
The meeting also unanimously resolved to constitute three delegations to engage in dialogue with movements currently underway in the country, including the movement against the Chief Election Commissioner, the movement against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and movements seeking a change of government through democratic and constitutional means in opposition to the government’s anti-people policies. To coordinate various movements with Desh Bachao Morcha, at least one meeting will be organised in every state. The maximum possible number of members of the Morcha’s Core Committee will participate in these meetings.
Dates and conveners for meetings of Kisan Bachao Morcha have been finalised in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Manipur, Maharashtra and several other states. The meeting was chaired by Jasbir Singh Bhatti, a prominent farmer leader from Bathinda district, Punjab. Farmer leaders V. M. Singh and Gurnam Singh Charuni jointly conducted the proceedings. Besides farmer leaders, several prominent individuals attended the meeting, including Supreme Court advocates Mahmood Pracha, Bhanu Pratap Singh and Balraj Singh Malik.
