Punjab’s Drug Crisis Becomes Election Issue After Amit Shah’s Tweet; BRP Claims It Can End Drug Menace in 100 Hours
Party Sounds Election Bugle After Replacing Navjot Kaur Sidhu with Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhari Kalan as Punjab in Charge ; Seeks Public Support
Chandigarh 16 October ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : The issue of drug abuse in Punjab has once again become the centre of political debate following a tweet by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Statements from various political parties have begun emerging on the issue. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Party (BRP) has also unveiled its election agenda, making a major announcement against the drug menace. Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan, the party’s Punjab in-charge, claimed, citing the national president Amlan Biswas , that if the Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Party is given 100 hours, it will be capable of taking decisive steps to eliminate the drug problem from Punjab. He also responded to Amit Shah through a social media post and appealed to the people of Punjab to support the party.
The party said a special task force would be formed to combat drug trafficking and abuse. New personnel would be recruited for the force, which would be kept free from political pressure. According to the party, the task force would be provided with the necessary powers and resources so that it could act against drug networks without political or administrative interference. The party also said it would appeal to the government to seal the national borders and seek the Centre’s assistance in preventing drug smuggling from across the border. It claimed that if these measures were implemented effectively and comprehensively, tangible results could be achieved within the stipulated timeframe towards eliminating the drug problem in Punjab.
The appointment of Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhari Kalan as the party’s Punjab chief after Navjot Kaur Sidhu was relieved of organisational responsibilities is being viewed as part of the party’s new strategy. The party is now seeking to strengthen its political base in the state by placing the drug issue at the centre of its campaign. Grewal has promised a time-bound initiative against drugs. However, the party’s detailed action plan, legal framework and implementation strategy behind its claim of completely eliminating drugs from Punjab within 100 hours are yet to be made public. With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, political activity around issues such as drug abuse, unemployment and law and order is expected to intensify. It remains to be seen how the Bharatiya Rashtrawadi Party translates its claims into a concrete plan and how much support it can garner among voters.
