Sukhbir S Badal demands compensation for farmers whose paddy crop was swept away in Fazilka grain market.
(Also demands ‘girdwari’ at all places where paddy crop has been flattened due to heavy rain)
Chandigarh 11 October ( Ranjeet Singh Dhaliwal ) : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded immediate compensation for farmers whose paddy was swept away due to unprecedented flooding in the Fazilka grain market as well as conduct of a special ‘girdwari’ to assess the losses suffered by farmers due to heavy rains across the State. The SAD president said farmers suffered huge losses at the Fazilka grain market with a heavy downpour submerging paddy heaps and even sweeping away a huge quantity of the crop. “Since the market was submerged in five to six feet of water a large amount of paddy which had arrived at the ‘Mandi’ was swept away”. Badal said since the entire paddy in the Mandi had been submerged for a prolonged period, it was expected to be damaged. “Farmers should be adequately compensated for the same”.
Badal said farmers had suffered huge losses due to inadequate drainage facilities in the Mandi. “The imminent heavy rain spell was also forecast but they did not take required measures to safeguard the paddy crop lying in the Mandi”. He said immediate steps should be taken across the State to ensure adequate drainage facilities in all grain markets. He also demanded a comprehensive ‘girdwari’ be conducted at all places where paddy crop had bee flattened due to heavy rain. “Advance compensation at the rate of Rs 50,000 per acre should be disbursed to farmers as per the commitment given by chief minister Bhagwant Mann”. He also asked the chief minister to tell farmers had not been compensated for crop damages since the last two years. “Farmers have witnessed their crops being destroyed in floods and hailstorms but have not received any compensation despite promises”.
